A Tech Startup Success Story presented by

For anyone who would like to understand more about “big data” and “open data” and/or may be thinking about establishing their own tech startup company.
 
Brentyn Parkin is a North Mackay High old boy who is now based in Brisbane. He is an Advance Queensland Community Digital Champion and is passionate about making the most of digital technologies to get better outcomes for people who are vulnerable in the community. He is also an advocate of Open Data (freely available government data) and a supporter of GovHack 2016.
 
Seven years ago Brentyn founded My Community Directory. My Community Directory is based on Open Data and is a one-stop online community directory for the public, community organisations and Governments. The organisation is Queensland based and is designed to link local, Council-based directories together in a single, simple to use platform. You can view a short (2 minute) introductory video here.
 
From a tech startup seven years ago, My Community Directory now employs 12 people. Its website receives around 85,000 unique visitors (and 110,000 visitors) every month, making it a premier source of connection between community services organisations and the public.
In his presentation, Brentyn will talk not only about My Community Directory and its use of Open and Shared Data, but also about his journey from tech startup to successful organisation.

Dennis is an Electrical and Control Systems Engineer and was appointed President of Startup Mackay Inc. in June 2016. He is a member of Engineers Australia, AISA, MITN, DMLA within the Education, Training, Research and Innovation Pillar, and the Reference Group for the Digital Economy Strategy. He has also been inducted into the Advance Queensland Community Digital Champion program where he aims to encourage Queenslanders to explore and enjoy the benefits of the digital age.
